Frequently Asked Questions

Once a student registers and pays for a course (standard or hybrid), there are no refunds unless the course is canceled; this is why we strongly recommend travel insurance. On rare occasions and case-by-case, a course sponsor may make an exception.

All medical courses:
  • Wilderness Medicine Handbook
  • Patient Notes
  • Expert instruction
  • First aid supplies - all of the materials you need for skill labs and simulations
  • Certification (if all eligibility & performance criteria are met)
Hybrid medical courses:
  • Wilderness Medicine Handbook + shipping
  • Patient Notes
  • Course website access
  • Online testing access
  • Expert instruction
  • First aid supplies - all of the materials you need for skill labs and simulations
  • Certification (if all eligibility & performance criteria are met)

WMTC graduates can view, download, print, and email a copy of their certification card through our certification database anytime. Graduates must log in to the database with the email they used when registering for their course. Problems occasionally arise due to browser pop-up settings. Email the WMTC Office for help accessing a certification.

We recommend that anyone registering for an in-person course purchase trip insurance in the event they cannot attend or must leave a course. Remember, there are no refunds, even in the case of illness. Check out WMTC's health policies & recommendations for more.

Most WMTC Certifications last for a maximum of three years — some students receive a 1- or 2-year certification. WBLS certifications last for a maximum of two years. The expiration date appears on your certification card. There is no grace period.

The recertification options are different for each certification. Please visit the page of your certification to have to learn about your recertification options.

All standard courses—except WFA and WBLS courses—have a final in-class written exam; students must score 80% or greater to pass. Hybrid students must pass the online exams to attend the In-Person session.

No. All our certification courses require in-person training under the direction of a licensed WMTC instructor.  All-online courses do not meet the minimum Wilderness Medicine Education Collaborative (WMEC) certification standards.

Registering for the Online Module only: We recommend taking an entire hybrid course whenever possible. There may, however, be some cases when it makes sense to register for and begin the Online Module before or without registering for the In-person Session:

  • You'd like to get started on the Online Module, and there are not currently any In-person Sessions that fit your schedule.
  • You have time to complete the Online Module now, and may not have time later.
  • You are interested in the education contained in the Online Module and don't need certification.
While you may register for the Online Module only now, you will need to register for and complete an In-person Session within one year of registering for the Online Module to receive certification. Please contact us to discuss your situation before registering.

In the rare case that your recertification course is canceled by the instructor or course sponsor and your current certification expired before or within six months of the canceled course date, WMTC will grant you a six-month extension from the date of your canceled course to take another WMTC recertification course. You must complete all recertification requirements within the six-month extension period to be eligible to recertify. This includes both online and in-person components. If there is a gap between when your current certification expires and your rescheduled recertification course, you may request a temporary certification from the WMTC office. Please contact us with any questions or to request a temporary certification within one month of your canceled course.

Minors must be approved by the WMTC office (email office@wildmedcenter.com for approval). If a minor is approved, the release form and parent/guardian permission is a part of online registration.
