About WMTC
WMTC History:
The Wilderness Medicine Training Center was founded in 1997 by Paul Nicolazzo and incorporated in 2008 in Washington State. Our international headquarters lie in the heart of the North Cascades near the small towns of Mazama and Winthrop. With over 35 years of experience leading trips and training trip leaders to function safely in challenging environments, Paul started WMTC because he believed there was a better way to effectively educate people in wilderness medicine and outdoor program risk management. Over the years and under his direction, WMTC has repeatedly proved this as we continue to develop new teaching strategies, materials, and curricula for today's outdoor professionals and recreationists. We opened our first International Training Center in 2017 and continue to teach courses worldwide.
Mission:
Provide high-quality, practical courses, consultation, books, and supplies in wilderness medicine and outdoor program risk management.
Vision:
Help create a world where outdoor leaders and wilderness EMS clinicians have the medical and site management ability to prevent , assess, and treat injury or illness of those in their care.

Wilderness travel can be inherently dangerous, and wilderness medicine training is imperative for effective risk management.
"The system WMTC uses is very practical, prescriptive, and works."
"The curriculum and the instructors are of the highest quality. In addition to the practical medical training, I learned a great deal about trust and communication. As a bonus, the course was much more fun than I expected."
"Best courses available. Best handbook made."
"These aren’t abstract scenarios — they’re the kinds of emergencies any of us can encounter in everyday life. Anyone working with children or adults in the outdoors will benefit enormously from this training. I’ve personally faced three life‑threatening situations, and without this level of preparation I would not have been able to step in and save those individuals. This training doesn’t just build confidence; it equips you with the skills that genuinely make the difference between life and death."
"From my perspective, taking a wilderness medicine course from WMTC is one of the most valuable investments you can make in yourself. In the real world, emergencies don't always happen in places where help is immediately available. Beyond the life-saving skills, it gave me the confidence to share that knowledge with others in my workplace, my community, and my team. I know I'll use what I learned in my work and pass it on to the people around me."
"I have already told some friends that I highly recommend taking this course through WMTC. I hear about friends taking WFR courses through other companies that aren’t as thorough and don't take the time to answer the questions my friends are taking the course for. I am very grateful that I took this course through WMTC."
"If you have any concerns about the unknown, WMTC will give you confidence to move forward."
"If you can connect with your group and be vulnerable, WMTC is an insanely educational and enjoyable experience."
"I took this course to better understand what problems can and can’t be addressed in the field, how to prioritize them, learn techniques for improvising treatments with common expedition gear, how to build a good first aid kit based on the group and trip activities, how to remain calm in high-stress situations, and understand the decisions behind evacuations. WMTC didn’t disappoint."
"The biggest takeaway for me is recognizing risk factors in the field and intervening before something happens. This knowledge is what I will use the most after this course."
"It could save my life or someone else’s, especially since I live so far from medical care. WMTC is incredibly thorough, cares about their students, and sets them up for success. I have friends who have taken courses through WMTC and other wilderness medicine providers; They have all said the same thing: that WMTC is the best provide."
"I’ve taken courses from other providers, and WMTC courses are the best. High quality and very knowledgeable instructors who have an incredible breadth and depth of knowledge, and importantly, the ability to share it."
"Good value for money. Very engaging."
"WMTC’s courses are of much higher quality than those of other companies."
"When considering the dangers of the outdoors, I live by the idea of “hoping for the best, preparing for the worst.” I highly recommend WMTC! Their courses are engaging, fun, intense, supportive, empowering, and really, really practical."
"There is a great mix of preventative risk management and emergency response concepts. I appreciate that the course emphasizes concepts that can be applied in various situations vs a single 'right answer.' Anyone who engages regularly in outdoor activities would benefit from a WMTC course."
"WMTC doesn’t just teach you how to treat people; it also teaches you how to think critically and process information effectively in a difficult situation."
